Discussion Themes
Continuity Planning
Developing Business Continuity Plans (BCPs), Research Continuity Plans (RCPs), or Academic Continuity Plans (ACPs) within a university environment presents both challenges and opportunities. One of the main challenges is the diverse operations and decentralized structure typical of universities and colleges. Additionally, budget constraints and a shortage of skilled personnel can make creating and maintaining comprehensive continuity plans difficult. Despite these challenges, there are significant opportunities to foster a resilient, adaptive, and efficient institution that can effectively respond to unforeseen disruptions.
Threat Assessments, Hazard Vulnerability Assessments (HVA), Risk Assessments
In a university environment, these types of assessments are critical processes for identifying potential dangers and preparing for them. Risk and hazard vulnerability assessments are crucial to protecting the university's mission, prioritizing mitigation efforts, and enhancing safety, preparedness, and resilience. In this session, we will discuss the different types of assessments, how they can be used, and the importance of coordination and collaboration between the various groups on campus in conducting and maintaining risk and hazard assessments for your university or college.
Crisis Communications
An all-hazards crisis communications plan is essential in a university setting to ensure timely, accurate, and coordinated communication during emergencies. Universities face diverse risks, including natural disasters, public health crises, and security threats. A well-prepared plan enables clear messaging to protect students, staff, and the community, maintain trust, and minimize disruption. By addressing all potential hazards, such a plan promotes resilience, safety, and the university's ability to respond effectively to any crisis.
