Heidi Huber-Stearns, Director of the Center for Wildfire Smoke Research and Practice and James Johnston, an Assistant Research Professor in Institute for Resilient Organizations, Communities, and Environments talk about how the firefighting workforce could shift and should prepare with federal cuts.
The Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) record of decision directs federal agencies to monitor the social and economic impacts of the NWFP in two ways: determine whether the supply of timber and nontimber resources is predictable and sustainable; and evaluate changes in local communities associated with federal forest management. The methodology for this 25-year NWFP report combines established practices for measuring timber and other forest resource supply trends with the application of novel social science research approaches.
In collaboration with the Northern Blues Restoration Partnership (NBRP), Wallowa Resources contracted with the Ecosystem Workforce Program (EWP) at the University of Oregon to conduct socioeconomic monitoring for Northern Blues All-Lands restoration projects (referred to here as the Northern Blues Project). This report presents the results of social and economic monitoring from the Northern Blues All-Lands Multi-Party Monitoring Plan for fiscal years 2024 and 2025.

Student Experience

Students from departments across UO work with EWP faculty to assist with EWP research, collaborative project coordination, web design and maintenance, and general office support.

We provide UO graduate and undergraduate students with experiential education through work study employment, paid and unpaid internships, independent study, and graduate employment (GE positions). These opportunities advance students' understanding and technical skills through participation in real projects. Available opportunities vary with projects.

Students interested in working with EWP on research projects should first visit our current projects page to better understand our research topic areas.
